Act IV / In Process

Works in process

New plays are built in stages: pages, readings, rooms, revisions, and the patience to listen.

A play rarely arrives complete. It is tested by actors, questioned by directors, and changed by the pressure of an audience. The work in process is not a lesser version of the finished play. It is the place where the play learns what it is.

The development path

01

Draft

The first version establishes voice, pressure, and the world of the play.

02

Reading

Actors give the language a body. The writer hears what the page cannot show.

03

Workshop

Scenes are staged, cut, rebuilt, and tested against the whole.

04

Production

Design, direction, and an audience complete the work in public.

Where the work has grown

Development has taken place in artist colonies, theatre laboratories, and producing houses. The list below records some of those rooms.

  • Culture Project
  • New Century Theatre Company
  • Playwrights Horizons
  • WordBRIDGE
  • Oregon Shakespeare Festival
  • Tobacco Theatre, United Kingdom
  • Djerassi Resident Artists Program
  • Ucross Foundation
  • SPACE at Ryder Farm

For producers and collaborators

Inquiries about unproduced work, commissions, and development partnerships can be sent to the agency. It helps to include the producing organisation, the intended audience, the proposed dates, and the scope of the room you can offer.
